Grateful Dead “If You’re Not a Head You’re Behind” Leather Patch — Stealie Tree of Life

Handmade genuine vegetable-tanned leather patch, laser-engraved and laser-cut right here at JRAD’s Groovy Emporium in Eugene, Oregon.

This one features a psychedelic Tree of Life design where the roots and branches weave into twin Steal Your Face skulls — crowned with the classic head’s mantra: “If You’re Not a HEAD, You’re Behind.” A little sacred geometry, a little cosmic humor, all Dead.

How to Apply

This patch has an iron-on backing and can also be sewn or glued.

• Iron-on: Place the patch where you want it, then apply heat from the garment side only — patch face down against the fabric. Use a pressing cloth or parchment between the iron and the garment. Never iron directly on the leather, as direct heat will scorch the grain.
• Sew-on: Stitch around the edge for the most permanent hold — great for jackets, vests, and bags that see heavy wear.
• Glue: A flexible fabric or leather adhesive works well for quick application.

Care

This is raw, undyed vegetable-tanned leather, so a little care keeps it looking its best:

• Getting caught in the rain or splashed won’t ruin it — veg-tan handles moisture — but always let it air dry naturally, away from direct heat.
• Avoid machine washing and machine drying. If the garment needs washing, hand wash gently and lay flat to air dry. Machine heat and tumbling can warp, stiffen, or darken the leather.
• Water spotting and gradual darkening (patina) are normal and part of the character of natural leather — it only gets better with age.
• To recondition over time, a small amount of leather balm or neatsfoot oil will nourish the hide.

Each patch has natural leather grain and tonal variation — no two are exactly alike. Sew or glue onto jackets, hats, bags, vests, or anywhere that needs more groove.
